What I am trying to tackle in this thesis is not a question or dilemma. But rather, an emotional integration of identity and the self. It is also a recognition: an understanding of the past to comprehend the present.

I have come so far and I have grown so much, but I do not shame the person who I was. I do not shame them for finding comfort in self isolation. And I know that that person and I are one and the same and that the shame is mine to decide to carry or let go. I am not moving on from this person, I am not letting go or forgetting, I am integrating them into myself and taking account of the sum of our being.

And now, I am creating a space to invite others in: to invite viewers to reckon with themselves and with their pasts.

Bio

Sawyer Strouth is a non-binary artist-printmaker currently residing in Portland, Maine.

Relishing in the exploration of texture, color, and layering within pieces, Strouth pushes the boundaries of their materials with experimentation in collage, monotype, and mixed media additions. With an intuitive approach to creating, they are able to let the unconscious speak through their hands and onto the page to create artwork that reflects an inner self.

Their current interest in printmaking lies in collagraph, monoprint, monotype, and wood cut, with an emphasis on abstract shapes and unconventional sizes.
