While Supplies Last: An Exhibit and Mini-Mart

Inspired by a Grub Street article on the ‘shoppy-shop’, a term coined by Neil Shankar referring to the phenomena of aestheticized, Instagrammable, boutique grocers, homegoods stores, and lifestyle shops, I have designed my own shoppy-shop, a storefront which will display several items designed with the intention of investigating, critiquing, and subverting the phenomenon of aesthetic-based consumerism. I want these pieces to feel authentic to a real store, as though the audience could potentially buy some of them, but to also, upon closer inspection, reveal a second, or double meaning which relates to ideas surrounding overconsumption, purchasing items purely for aesthetic or trend-based reasons, and the effects those acts have on ourselves and culture.

Bio

Molly (Mallaidh) Lawrence has a BFA in graphic design but calls herself a lot of different things (avid crossword-doer, for one). Her name means drop of the sea in Irish.

Her practice is rooted in a love for research, history, archives, and the examination of modern culture through the lens of design.
