Hannah Polly Kinscheck

Have you ever given flowers to someone with a meaning in mind? We all know red roses mean love, and name any white flower somewhere it will mean innocence or purity. Flower language has been a part of our culture for all of our lives, a small fun thing we remember from time to time. I wanted to take that a step further. The same flower can have many meanings, and those meanings can be felt differently depending on the situation. My last grandmother Polly photographed hundreds of flowers throughout her life. For all my life, birthdays, Christmas, or any other special occasions, her cards have had her photos on them, making her photos embedded with some of my fondest memories. In these three digitally illustrated comics I take the meanings of flowers and stretch them into a story. Personifying and anthropomorphizing emotions and feelings through flowers. Bringing them to life in three beautifully illustrated stories. I’ve learned so much about myself and the process of narrative illustration while working on this thesis. The meanings of flowers have created a place in my heart. I hope anyone reading these will let themselves ruminate on what these flowers mean to them.
