Carly Browdy

Illustrating Heavyweight

“Maybe you’ve laid awake and imagined how it could have been, how it might yet be, but the moment to act was never right. Well, the moment is here and the podcast making it happen is Heavyweight.” – Heavyweight podcast

Carly Browdy is a mixed-media illustrator. Her work often features nature (especially birds and roots), the color blue, and whimsical design elements. Carly uses illustration to reflect themes of community, solidarity, and the interconnectedness of all things. By combining clean, intuitive communication with playful visuals that evoke a sense of wonder, her work offers effective visual storytelling that reminds the viewer of the magic of everyday life.

Carly’s thesis provides visual companions for the auditory storytelling of the podcast Heavyweight. In form and in practice, Heavyweight asks us what we owe to one another, a fundamental question underscoring Carly’s work and artistic process. By visually communicating the stories of the individuals in these four episodes – Etta, Isabel, the Elliot brothers, and John – Carly aims to reflect the humanity, depth, and wit of Heavyweight, while demonstrating the importance of a visual dialogue with auditory sources.
