Warp & Weft
Warp & Weft is a series of paintings that addresses and pairs gridded forms with processes of textile mending on raw canvas. My work primarily alters narratives of value by using discarded materials gathered for my surroundings. This frugality is embedded in my practice from my upbringing on a Vermont homestead – the material limitations I place on myself are essential to my practice; working with found materials removes the preciousness that feeds into perfectionist tendencies as well as the emotional burden of contributing to consumer culture. This practice of deviation has a material and a social component, as associations with domestic labor – long belittled as “hobbyist” in misogynistic renderings of feminine crafts – allow for discussions of femininity and masculinity into my practice.
The work of Agnes Martin as well as Josef and Anni Albers has informed Warp & Weft. Their use of marks, lines, repetition, minimal gestures, and colors vibrate my vision. In and out, patterns form. I see Agnes Martin and Anni Albers use the grid as a framework for care. Their intentional repetitions and deviations are manifestations of flawed human nature. The grid works spatially and temporally; because of this it contains contradictions. My work functions as failed grids.
